How Our Tests for Blood Work.

A test is used to measure or examine cells, chemicals, proteins, or other substances in the blood.  Blood testing, also known as blood work, is one of the most common types of lab tests. Blood work is often included as part of a regular check.  This test is a lab analysis of things that may be found in your blood. You may have a test to keep track of how well you are managing a condition such as diabetes, heart disease or high cholesterol. You may also have a test for routine checkups, a heart health check or when you are ill.  Testing can give your healthcare provider a lot of information. He or she can see if certain elements in your blood are in a normal range. But in many cases, a blood test is only part of the information your healthcare provider needs to make a diagnosis of a health condition. You might need to have some other types of testing as well.

What to expect

For this test, a health care provider will need to take a sample of your blood. This is also called a blood draw. When a blood draw is taken from a vein, it’s known as venipuncture.

How to prepare

You don’t need any special preparations for most blood tests. For some testing, you may need to fast (not eat or drink) for several hours before your test. For your test, your provider or doctor will let you know if there are any special instructions to follow before arriving for testing.

Your labs

Your blood sample will be sent to a lab. Trained technicians then test and look for the information the healthcare provider has ordered. This may take a day or up to a week or more. Check back with your doctor or healthcare provider’s office to find out about the results of your test.
